Haggard Park

The park has a gazebo, playground, and restrooms and is the home of the Interurban Railway Museum. This gazebo is available for reservation through the parks and recreation reservation system.

It was reported in May of that 1925 that the Lions Club of Plano was sponsoring a movement for a park between the Interurban Rail Line and the Christian Church. In late April the Lions Club set aside $1,300 to a fund for the park. The Plano Star-Courier then reported that the Lions Club announced that C.S Haggard, or "Uncle Clint" had given $2,000 and that Mrs. C Saigling made a generous gift of $1,300.

The Lions Club decided that the park should be named in honor of the largest donor. According to the decision reached by the club, the park will be known as Haggard Memorial Park, but will be a park for all Plano.

"The purchase price of the land, the cost of paving on the south and west sides, and other improvements will cost approximately $10,000" the paper went on to say. Now, should we wonder about the cost today or what that sum of money may have meant to these citizens in 1925?!

The park began in 1928 having only 1.65 acres. By 1986 the park had grown to just under 5 acres and was updated and prepared for the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration that year. That update included the removal of an existing building facing 15th Street and purchase of the Interurban Railway Station, which was renovated and opened in 1990.

The most recent renovation was completed in October 2003 with the addition of half of an acre, bringing today's park to 5 ½ acres of beautiful park space amidst a thriving historic downtown district.
