Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature, returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart. When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate who hasn't quite gotten over high school either.

Charlize Theron is by far the best thing about the darkly comedic Young Adult, the latest collaboration between screenwriter Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman, the team behind Juno.
If Theron physically turned herself into a monster in the 2003 film Monster, the role for which she won a Best Actress Oscar, here she gives new meaning to the phrase "ugly on the inside." She plays Mavis, a bored and recently divorced writer of teen-romance novels who, upon learning through a mass e-mail that her boyfriend from her high-school days in small-town Minnesota has just become a dad, decides to go there, break up his marriage and live with him happily ever after.
