'Albert Nobbs' is a bit too reserved for its own good

The story's big twist -- the titular hotel butler is, in fact, a woman posing as a man -- is hardly a secret.

And although the movie feels as though it may never really burst to life (it's nearly an hour in before the audience understands why Nobbs does what he does), there are moments of genuine pathos tucked into this otherwise straightforward adaptation of Irish novelist George Moore's 1927 short story The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs.
