A Tale of Two Brothers / Stories of the 36th and 90th Infantry Divisions
Our current display features two Texas born units that have very similar histories but never fought in the same areas. Both the 36th and the 90th Division were formed in WWI, the 36th at Camp Bowie in Fort Worth, Tx, and the 90th at Camp Travis in San Antonio, TX. They were both made up of smaller State Guard units from Texas and Oklahoma. Because Oklahoma had only recently been made a State they had very little organized State Guard units, so they were folded in with the Texas units. Both would serve overseas and return as heros. The 36th and 90th would be deactivated and then recalled for service in WWII. The 36th would fight in Italy and Southern France while the 90th would fight from Normandy to Czechoslovakia. Both Divisions would find themselves training and preparing to fight the Cold War for the next 50 years but without any combat duty. Then after the attacks on 9/11 both units found themselves back in action to fight the War on Terror. As to date both Divisions have deployed units to Iraq on multiple occasions.
