More than 20 years ago, Texas Motorplex helped propel the NHRA into a new era.
"It changed the face of drag racing as the first major arena in the sport," said Kenny Bernstein, a six-time NHRA champion and former Dallas resident. "It brought a respect factor we didn't have before."
The Texas Motorplex was unique with its wraparound three-story tower and 24 luxury suites, along with the first all-concrete racing surface. With grandstands on both sides, the facility had more than 40,000 seats, the most in the sport at the time.
Now, the NRHA-sanctioned track still holds national, regional and local drag races. There's a Fast Fridays competition every weekend with a couple hundred street-legal racing cars participating each week. Annually, the track hosts the O'Reilly Chevy Spectacular with competitions between Corvettes, Camaros, El Caminos, Novas and more. It also hosts muscle car club challenges, monthly street racing competitions and swap meets.
