When riders hit the packed earth at Metroplex BMX, the world's only covered, year-round bicycle motocross track, DeSoto strikes pay dirt.
Inspired by the growing popularity of BMX racing, which will be included in the 2008 Olympics, the city spent close to $1million on the trend-setting track at Grimes Park. At least 85,000 visitors come to the track annually, track officials estimate.
Built in 1999, Metroplex BMX features a 1,000-foot track of hard-packed dirt. When the starting gate drops, riders bolt through an array of curves, berms and jumps. Little more than a helmet, long-sleeved shirt and pants are required, keeping costs low. Riders young and old tool around the track on smaller wheels than speed bikes and mountain bikes.
Most racers start with a 20-inch street bike, minus the chain guard and kickstand and with padding on the frame, handle bar and stem (about $100). Other needs are a helmet (about $30), a long-sleeved shirt and pants.
Girls and boys classes are divided into age groups from 5 and under to 51 and over; skill levels include novice, intermediate and expert. All riders start as novices and work up to more advanced levels by winning races.
The American Bicycle Association offers a free one-day trial membership and a $25 30-day membership, including insurance, for racing at a local track; a $45 annual membership is good at tracks nationwide.
