Located at the heart of Denton's downtown square, the old County Courthouse is one of the City's enduring symbols. The Courthouse was built in 1896 and now houses the "Courthouse-on-the-square Museum." The county has since built a new courthouse located at 1450 E. McKinney St. The City of Denton is the County Seat of Denton County. While both the City and County were named for founder John B. Denton, they are separate governmental entities.
