Taqueria El Atoron

This Mexico City-style taqueria and torteria may not be much to look at. Nor is the tiny dining room particularly inviting. Nor is the service even reasonably good. But the tacos are hard to argue with, especially at a dollar a pop: tender, nicely spiced al pastor; well-seasoned bistec; excellent lengua (tongue), which isn't too fatty. "Tortas gigantes" (giant sandwiches), promises the sign outside, and indeed they're mammoth: a full 8 ½ inches long and 5 ½ inches wide. The Texana is filled with beef fajita, chorizo, quesillo (Oaxacan-style string cheese), ripe sliced tomatoes, onions, avocado, frijoles and pickled jalapeño that packs quite a punch. At $5.50, it's enough sandwich for two hungry people, messy and satisfying. El Atoron has one of the best aguas frescas around: pure, bright, not-too-sweet pineapple.
